Matthew Meyer
Ecopsychology focuses on healing the rupture between modern people and the natural world. Through Ecopsychology I was able to combine my background in outdoor leadership and my training as a Clinical Psychologist.
Through collaboration with The Sierra Club, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Big City Mountaineers I was able to launch backpacking wilderness mentorship programs for underserved young people from marginalized communities. Practical Ecopsychology brought together all of the facets of my being, so I could bring people to encounters with nature that were personally transformational, and socially meaningful.
Witnessing the growth, trust and community that is created within meaningful encounters with the wild has brought purpose to my peregrinations, and an expansive, experiential edge to my practice of wilderness depth coaching. Coalescing my love for wild adventure and psychologically informed social change.
My approach to Ecopsychology has been shaped through the work of: Carl G. Jung’s Depth Psychology, Arne Naess’ philosophical work on Deep Ecology, Thich Nhat Hanh’s spiritual work on Interbeing, Steven Foster and Meredith Little’s work on wilderness rites of passage, Bill Plotkin’s Soulcraft and Wild Mind approach, and Joanna Macy’s spiritual environmental activism.
